If it's so easy why can so few pull it off

[Reading time: 1 minute 14 seconds]

I’m talking of DevOps adoption of course.

There are many smart books about it, such as the famous DevOps Handbook or the excellent Accelerate.

They are supremely good, powerful books. They tell you everything you need to know.

    …except they don’t, do they?

I think one of the more insidious problem these books have is that they’re too good.

Things that you intuitively know to be hard, they make sound simple.

Things that you took so long to grasp, they proclaim to be obvious.

Talk about a blow to the ego.

And worse than that, I think it scares away some people. They correctly see this huge task set out before them… and decide that the grass on their side of the fence looks pretty green and juicy after all. Because the fence seems so tall.

But I think this is all really unfortunate. Because I agree the fence is really high – but it’s also very full of openings. You don’t actually need to force your way over it. Instead, you should stand and look at it – you’ll find a smart way through it instead.

I have a growing suspicion few people pull off a successful DevOps transition not because it’s hard (it is, but they could overcome it), but because they encounter barriers in their head.
